Hot Air Balloon Somerset

Hot Air Balloon Rides from Taunton & Throughout Somerset

Somerset is a county of timeless beauty — rolling hills, honey‑stone villages, and landmarks that have stood for centuries. From the Quantocks to the Blackdowns, from the Somerset Levels to its market towns, the landscape unfolds like a living tapestry, best appreciated not from the road but from the sky…

For three generations, Fly Away Ballooning has been part of that view. As a family‑run team, Somerset is where our story began, and where ballooning feels most at home. Each flight from Taunton drifts over countryside shaped by history and nature, revealing perspectives few ever see.

Ballooning is both exhilarating and zen. One moment you’re ducking under billowing fabric, the basket swaying as the burners roar overhead, your heart racing with the sheer madness of what you are about to do.

The next—total silence. The roar fades. The ground drifts away. You’re floating.

No engine. No turbulence. Just the stillness of drifting with the breeze, skimming treetops, waving at tiny people and watching the world from above.

After 45–60 minutes comes the gentle bump of landing in a field you’ll likely never find again.

Exciting, peaceful, unforgettable.

About Your Flight
Where do we take off?
All our launch sites have been hand-picked to guarantee you experience the very best of your chosen area. The launch site is chosen dependent on the weather to give you the longest, safest and most enjoyable flight in your preferred area.
What time do we meet?
Arrival times vary throughout the year as all balloon flights are scheduled depending on sunrise and sunset times. While the displayed times are generally accurate, please note that they are subject to slight change.
Weather & Cancellations
How do I know if my flight is going ahead?
All balloon flights are highly weather dependent.

We aim to contact you by 16:00 the day before your flight to confirm whether it will proceed, as well as the meeting time and location. Please note that this may sometimes be as late as 22:00 the night before a morning flight or as late as 16:00 on the day of an evening flight. We aim to contact everyone with as much notice as operational procedures allow.

*If you are traveling long distances or booking hotels specifically for ballooning, we strongly recommend contacting us two days prior to your departure and choosing accommodations with a flexible cancellation policy.
What happens if my flight is cancelled?
In the event of a cancellation, you will receive a notification via SMS and email. This message will include a one-click reschedule link, enabling you to easily view available slots and select a new date for your experience. You can also call the office to reschedule.

Your flight voucher is valid for 24 months from the date of purchase, during which you can rebook as needed. If you make at least 10 attempts to fly within these 24 months and flights are cancelled by us, we’ll extend your voucher for an additional 12 months free of charge.

We offer a refundable option for some flights. This option must be selected at the time of checkout and entitles you to a full refund for the value of your flight, excluding the cost of the refundable option itself, in the event of weather cancellations only. Without this option, your voucher is non-refundable under any circumstances.

Terms & Conditions
Why would a flight be cancelled?
We really regret having to cancel and rearrange flights as we know the disappointment that comes with it for our guests. However, your safety is our top priority and our duty of care is to operate in a safe manner. As a commercial balloon operator we do not fly in marginal or unsafe weather conditions.

Hot air ballooning is weather dependent so your flight can be cancelled if the weather does not make it safe to fly you. Additionally, flights may be dependent on mechanical performance or staffing availability. Similarly, a trip may be postponed due to less than minimum numbers being achieved.

Passenger Requirements
Is there an age limit?
Whilst there is no maximum age limit for ballooning, a child under the age of 7 years is not able to fly with us due to safety regulations.
Is there a weight limit?
For safety reasons related to weight-to-volume ratios, we’re unable to accommodate passengers over 18 stone (115 kg) on shared flights, unless a weight supplement is applied. This requires purchasing two flight vouchers, allowing us to adjust passenger numbers to maintain a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.
Can I fly if I’m pregnant ?
Unfortunately, for safety reasons, we cannot fly you at any stage of pregnancy. If you become pregnant during your voucher's validity, please get in touch to arrange an extension.

As our vouchers are generously valid for two years, we’re unable to offer free extensions. Extensions are valid for a further 12 months and cost £50pp for weekday availability or £65pp to include weekends and must be arranged within the original validity period.

Terms & Conditions
Am I fit to fly?
Generally, anyone can partake in ballooning. You need to be able to climb in and out the basket, stand unassisted for about an hour, and be able to bend your knees briefly to absorb the impact. Passengers must be able to fully understand and follow all instructions provided by the pilot. Non-English speakers are welcome, but please let us know in advance so we can ensure clear communication.

Our balloon basket features a door for easy entry and exit, though its use may sometimes be restricted due to conditions. We will always do our best to make it accessible for those who need it. During the flight, you’ll be standing in the basket, which provides good support with both a front and back to lean on. While most landings are soft, bumpy landings do occur. If you are concerned, we recommend you consult your doctor.

You must not fly if you are suffering from any significant medical condition or if you have recently undergone major surgery.

Your Pilot

Your Pilot

Meet Hugo, your pilot for your hot air balloon ride in Somerset and lifelong ballooning enthusiast. His grandmother (a pioneer in the balloon industry) flew these same skies, and his father helped form innovations that shape modern-day ballooning. Now, Hugo brings his own unique expertise, navigating the familiar patchwork of fields, hedge-bound lanes and rolling hills he grew up in. Showing you his home from above is one of his greatest joys, as he points out all the best views, valleys, and hidden gems below. “I love ballooning, and there’s nothing quite like it when you’re floating in the countryside where you grew up. The nature visible across the Somerset Levels is particularly special” - Hugo

The Experience

Arrival & Setting Up

Arrival & Setting Up

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by your pilot and crew as preparations begin. After a short safety briefing and time for any questions, you’ll be invited to help lay out and assist with the inflation. A powerful fan fills the envelope with cold air, and you’ll watch as it slowly takes shape before your pilot adds heat, bringing the balloon upright to its full height of around 90 feet. It’s now time to climb aboard.

Take Off & Flight

Take Off & Flight

Before take off, your pilot will demonstrate the landing procedure and make sure everyone feels comfortable and ready. Then, as the burners roar to life, you’ll rise smoothly into the sky and take in breathtaking 360° views of the landscape below. Once airborne, the flight is calm and peaceful, broken only by the occasional whoosh of the burner. Drifting with the wind, each moment reveals a new perspective — from deer moving through the fields to birds of prey circling gracefully beneath you.

Landing & Celebration

Landing & Celebration

As the flight comes to an end, your pilot will guide you through the landing — asking everyone to take the position explained before take off. Whether it’s a gentle stand-up landing or a lively drag across the grass, every touchdown brings its own sense of adventure. Once safely back on the ground, you’ll join the crew for a complimentary tipple — the perfect moment to celebrate, share stories, and reflect on your time in the sky.
