George: One sunny evening, my then-girlfriend (now wife!) and I were sitting in our garden, enviously watching balloons drift silently across the sky. She mentioned offhand how amazing it would be to actually go up in one—and right then I thought, Great, that’s my engagement plan sorted.
FAB: This is so true; great proposals often start with a simple idea. Something seen in passing while you’re going about day-to-day life. We love that you clocked this moment and then turned it into something spectacular you knew she’d love.
What was going through your mind right before the big moment?
George: Mostly, I hope she says yes (she did!). And then, I hope Hugo turns up (and of course he did).

Describe the moment of the proposal—what was said, how it felt, and what happened next?
George: I told my fiancée I wanted to go for an early morning walk at Royal Victoria Park. She’d guessed a proposal was coming, but after she said yes and I popped the ring on her finger, I casually walked her over to where the balloon was being set up and said, “We’re going up in that.” She didn’t see that part coming at all!
FAB: We loved that the proposal flight experience was such a surprise for Emma! Even if you’re not planning to propose in the balloon itself, booking a hot air balloon ride in Bath afterwards is such a memorable addition to the day.
What was the most memorable or unexpected part of the proposal flight experience?
George: The wind conditions on the day gave us a perfect west-to-east course over Bath, our home city for more than 10 years. I thought I knew Bath like the back of my hand, but seeing it from the air gave us a completely new perspective on the place we’d made home—and our life together.

I was very lucky to book a date and fly on it straight away, but the Great British weather can have other plans. You don’t want to be panicking at the end of the season if a long spell of poor weather means you haven’t had the chance to go up yet. As frustrating as postponements can be, the experience is worth the wait. Relaxing and exhilarating all at once—the perfect way to seal the deal.
