Two of our most memorable balloon flights of 2021 took place in Devon. Here is a little story of each.
One early morning last august we flew Michael and his family from Willand just to the East of Exeter in our Bath Gin balloon. We met the family at our launch site, Digger Land, around 7am. The children were extremely excited and we got them involved with the set up and inflation of the balloon which they loved.
Flying over the beautiful Devon countryside was second to none, a peaceful flight with a gentle breeze and gorgeous blue Skys meant you could see into the distance for miles. We flew over Tiverton, looking down at little houses gave a different perspective of this town.
We had a gentle landing, with the basket resting on its side which the family found hilarious, check out the photo evidence below! John the land owner walked up the hill into the field to meet us. He told us he had spent most of his life living in Africa which happened to be where Michael and his family originate.
He was over the moon to see the balloon landing in his field and even more excited to show us his homebuilt museum of all his African memorabilia in one of the barns. A lot of his collection was very familiar to the family, in particular the childrens toys, such as little bicycles and cars made of wire and scrap metal. This was a particularly touching moment, able to watch Michael and his wife show their kids what they used to make and play with when they were children themselves. We always say every flight is unique and one of a kind and we love these moments. Only on a Devon hot air balloon ride would this be possible! Thank you again John for your lovely cups of tea!
Another very memorable flight was launching from Powderham Castle, which resides by Star Cross. Powderham banks onto the river exe and is a deer estate with a spectacular castle, which is still used as a family home, but you can also visit and have a look around. It's ground are beautiful and green, you are able to see the lovely deer and even stop for a lovely lunch at their cafe.
We launched from the estate on a clear blue day and flew directly over the castle. It was a truly awesome site, we climbed higher and our track adjusted to take us over and along the river exe, leisurely moving towards Exeter city centre. We flew straight over Exeter city centre and got a wonderful view of Exeter Cathedral and the historic high street. We flew on and yet again the landscape changed to the green rolling hills of Devon.
We landed after around 90 minutes of flight time in a lovely field, in a truly rural area. However our crew found us no problem and we packed our lovely balloon up. For Fly Away Ballooning and our guests this was a truly magical flight in which we were able to see not only stunning coastal views, but also the hustling city and the serene green countryside.
